Willem Pijper 's Third Symphony calls for a large orchestra, with a number of extra instruments, including a saxophone, a mandoline, _ and a piano requiring two players. It is in one continuous movement.
Pijper, who died in 1947 at the age of fifty-three, was the leading Dutch composer of his generation, and as a teacher of composition he exercised a profound influence on many pupils who have since attained distinction. Harold Rutland
