Andre Gretry , who was born at Liege in 1741 and died near Montmorency in 1813, was a composer of a number of operas that received great success during the composer's lifetime. Apart from operas, however, he composed a certain amount of instrumental music, among which is the present Flute Concerto. Flute concertos by great composers are few and far between. Mozart, who wrote two concertos for this highly poetic solo instrument, is one of the few exceptions and Gretry another.
