3/4. In 1984 the Bishop-elect of Durham, David Jenkins , caused a storm of protest when he cast doubt on the literal truth of the Virgin Birth and the Resurrection. Three days after his consecration, the roof of York Minster was struck by lightning and the story of the "blaspheming Bishop" was born.
