The Brave: The Pilot Who Couldn't Fly

on BBC Radio 4 FM

[Starring] Frank Duncan

On 2 November 1944 Lancaster K for King of 405 Pathfinder Squadron was approaching its target in the Ruhr when an anti-aircraft shell exploded alongside. The pilot was badly wounded. Flight-Lieutenant George Martin, the navigator, found himself in charge.
A quick conference with the rest of the crew decided his course of action. The unconscious pilot could not bale out, therefore they must stick with the plane and try to get back to England. But George Martin had never flown a plane in his life, let alone landed one. Now, it seemed, was his chance to learn.
