Shot on location in New York City, director Sidney Lumet's compelling drama centres on the life of a Jewish pawnbroker. Sol Nazerman survived the Nazi death camps but watched his wife and family perish. His traumatic experiences have drained him of all emotional response and it seems that nothing and nobody can penetrate his self-absorption.
