Composer, pianist, bandleader and constant traveller, Duke Ellington was a workaholic, sketching out tunes in the back of a car. His music reflects his life on the road, whether evoking far-away places or the rattle of the railroad. To mark the 20th anniversary of his death, John Fordham reassesses his career, with contributions from bandleader John Dankworth , pianists Julian Joseph and Michel Petrucciani , and in rare archive, Ellington himself.
