Children in Need of Help
Cruelty, neglect, hardship, and handicap. All these are affecting children today to a far greater extent than many of us are willing to realise. Rising standards of living are not making things easier. In many ways the very reverse is the case. Affluence in some parents seems to breed irresponsibility.
Much is being done by the authorities through the setting up of child guidance services and special education provisions. But without the backing and support of trained and dedicated volunteers, and their continuing patience, care, and interest, the task would be next to impossible.
Over the years, through its Advisory Committees, the BBC has gained considerable experience of the detailed work undertaken by voluntary societies and by individuals all over these islands in their efforts to combat the many problems which threaten some of our very young. It seeks, through them, to give help where help is needed. That is why each year, towards Christmas, the BBC sponsors its own radio and television appeals for Children in Need of Help. If you care what becomes of the children in our midst, we hope you will listen and contribute. Frank Phillips is making the appeal in the Home Service today and Leslie Crowther will speak on BBC-tv next Sunday.
