In March this year the London Philharmonic Orchestra, with conductor John Pritchard and soloist Ida Haendel , toured the People's Republic of China.
This was the first-ever visit by an orchestra from the West.
Entertainment laid on by the hosts included a rehearsal by the Peking Central Philharmonic Society, a performance by the Shanghai Ballet Company, a concert by Shanghai schoolchildren, an acrobatic display and a visit to a People's Commune.
