(Series IV)
Professor Arnold J. Toynbee
In this short series Professor Toynbee aims at clearing up current misconceptions about Russia. To-night he passes in rapid review the history of Russia from Peter the Great to Lenin, showing the historical background of the 1917 Revolution. These two men have been most successful in dealing with Russia's fundamental problem - that of adjusting its own life to the impact of alien civilisation. Lenin and Peter the Great both brought the Russia of their time in political contact with Europe. Tonight the tasks, careers and achievements of the two men will be compared.
