Gunpowder signalled an end to the castle's value as a defensive strong-hold, and by the 1700s most of them were little more than overgrown ruins. But as a symbol of prestige and power the castle outline still carried potency. Sir Hugh Casson explores some imitation fortresses and examines the surprisingly varied relationship between architects and clients.
