Heritage: 4: From Peel to Thatcher - the Story of the Tory Party

on BBC Radio 4 FM

Six programmes in which Kenneth Hudson looks at the way we view history.
Originally a term of abuse, the word 'Tory' dates back to the 17th century. By the 1830s Sir Robert Peel was anxious to adopt a new name for his party since 'Tory' was associated with a barren, reactionary, backward-looking attitude. The word they chose was 'Conservative' and we still use it today. But how different was the Conservatism of Peel and Disraeli to that of their modern counterparts? Producer JOHN KNIGHT BBC Bristol
