5: To Touch the Heart
"It seems to me that music must touch the heart," wrote CPE Bach. For him and for Quantz, the aim of all their musical composition and performance was to excite the passions. Despite having to conform to their patron's rather conservative tastes, both wrote music of sparkling originality while in the service of Frederick the Great in Berlin. Including CPE Bach's Symphony in E, Wq 182 No 6, performed by Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert, and his Harpsichord Concerto in C minor with Ludger Remy (director/harpsichord) and Les Amis de Philippe. Quantz's Sonata in D is performed by Stephen Preston (flute) and Lucy Carolan (harpsichord), and the Horn Concerto in E flat is performed by Barry Tuckwell and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, conducted by lona Brown.
Repeated next Friday 12 midnight
