Casualty: Value for Money

on BBC One London

This week's story, Value for Money, reflects the current medical debate about whether persistent heavy smokers deserve continuing NHS treatment for smoking-related diseases.
An ex-football coach is brought in with circulatory problems due to smoking, but refuses to kick the habit and resents being pressured. The surgical registrar's attitude is that "we can't help if they insist on indulging in a filthy, dangerous habit", while Dave Masters believes that "to equate bad health habits with immoral habits is health fascism".
Meanwhile, there's insecurity and job dissatisfaction at Holby City Hospital. Mary seeks Charlie's advice on keeping her job; Brian feels wasted as a paramedic and Adele has a reason for being tired at work.
