S: Avalanche
Kingi, the Maori guide, and two climbers-Dr. Harold Ruddock and the Rev. Arthur Trent-are sheltering in a climbing hut during a violent mountain storm. Just as they have settled in their bunks for the night their rest is disturbed by the appearance of a mysterious stranger. Cast in order of speaking:
The action takes place in and around the guides' hut 4,000 feet up in the Southern Alps of present-day New Zealand.
