Sydney Kaplan and his Orchestra
Many listeners will remember Sydney Kaplan broadcasting last summer a series of memories of the Holborn Empire, of which he was musical director for some ten years. He learned the violin as a lad, and the first orchestra he played in was at the Victoria, Walthamstow (now the Granada), probably the first orchestra to accompany silent pictures. He used to be musical director of the Old London Music-Hall, Shoreditch, at which many famous Variety artists had their try-out.
