Commander Bill Boakes stood in elections for 30 years and never came remotely close to saving his deposit. In 1997 Sir James Goldsmith founded a political party in his quest for referendum on Europe. Dr Richard Taylor wanted to save his local hospital so he stood against the local MP, a government ministerwith a big majority.
