Everest-the Hardest Way

on BBC One London

John Hawkridge has suffered from cerebral palsy from birth. He should probably be in a wheelchair, but insists, with typical stubbornness, on walking painfully with the aid of sticks.
In spite of this, John refuses to abandon his love of mountains. He has climbed 40 of them, including Britain's highest, Ben Nevis.
But could a man in his condition fulfil his one remaining ambition: to climb to 19,000 feet in the very shadow of Everest?
Chris Bonington , who helped John prepare for the adventure, tells the story of one man's faith in his dream ... and in himself. Photography DESMOND SEAL Film editor PETER TAYLOR
