Fifty-three of the present Fellows of the Royal Society, the world's premier scientific institution, are refugees or children of refugees - that is one in 14 of the Society's membership. Fifteen of the refugees who sought asylum in Britain have won Nobel Prizes.
While Britain has a good record as a haven for academic and student refugees, Lord Ashby argues that we could do better: he suggests that we have not come to terms with the administrative consequences of our generosity.
