Le Prophète
Placido Domingo heads the cast in a performance from the Vienna State Opera of Meyerbeer's French grand opera set in the Low Countries in 1530. The prophet of the title is innkeeper John of Leyden (sung by Domingo). Bearing an uncanny resemblance to a portrait of the biblical King David, he is enlisted by the Anabaptists and crowned emperor in Munster Cathedral. But the distress of his repudiated mother and the suicide of his fiancee persuade John to desert the Anabaptist cause. He ignites a fire in the cellar of the imperial palace to consume himself, his family and his enemies. Sung in French.
