The Green Roofs of Windermere The first of seven programmes on family influences and traditions.
One of the most beautiful lakeland areas in Britain, Windermere has been a favourite with hikers and holidaymakers, artists and poets since the 18th century. But it was in 1846, with the coming of the steam train, that its development really began, The Pattinson family, well established locally as builders, saw its potential and, using the distinctive local stone and green slate, began their work. David Bean , in conversation with George Pattinson , talks about the family's unique influence on the growth and development of the district around Windermere.
