3.00 Mining the Archive
The bombing raid on London on the night of 10 May 1941 was one of the most devastating of World War II. Among the casualties was the Queen's Hall, home of the Proms and Britian's leading concert venue. Philip Fowke recreates the atmosphere of the hall in its heyday, with archive recollections from musicians and staff, and s made during its final decade. These include Proms performances conducted by Henry Wood , a Mozart piano concerto performed by Wilhelm Backhaus ; and an excerpt from the Verdi Requiem, conducted by Arturo Toscanini.
