' George Meredith '
Lady Milner
Lady Milner is to talk about a great Victorian and a great English novelist whom she knew from her childhood days. He and her father, Admiral Maxse, were intimate friends, and George Meredith would walk the four miles from Box Hill to her father's house at Effingham, and the two men would go for long walks together. Often she accompanied them and when she got tired they would pick her up and take it in turns to carry her while they talked about life, philosophy, and politics.
It is of Meredith the man she will speak-a man who was never embittered by his hard life. His books never began to sell until he was old, but laughter and fun and chaff were sweetness of life to him.
