In 1805 an expedition departed from the east coast of the United States to attempt to find a navigable route across the vast continent to the Pacific Ocean. The diaries kept by the joint leaders record their encounters with a bruising Arcadia - the wild rivers and marauding bears - as well as with the surprisingly friendly native occupants.
