Composers of the Week: Sousa and Joplin

on BBC Radio 3

John Philip Sousa (1854-1932), the March King, meets Scott Joplin (1868-
1917), the King of Ragtime, in a series which includes operettas by Sousa
(specially recorded by the BBC Singers and Concert Orchestra, conducted by John Wallace ), and which discovers that ragtime is thriving in the USA.
Presenter Fiona Talkington introduces artists appearing in this year's International Scott Joplin Festival in Sedalia, Missouri, where Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag was written. Each programme features a different version - today's is played by the United States Marine Band
(1909). Andrew Branch reads from Sousa's novel
The Fifth String.
