On this occasion Michael, and not his father, the Rector, has the exciting adventure. Michael is shown round a fourteenth-century monastery by Brother John, a kindly monk. Monasteries, at this time, were the home of education and culture. Michael finds the contrast between ' school' as it then was, and as he knows it, startling.
