Hildegard Arnold (violoncello)
Lucy Scollick (pianoforte) Emile Sjogren , who was born in Stockholm in 1853 and died there in 1918, was one of the most distinguished composers in Sweden. He studied at the Stockholm Conservatoire and in Berlin. Most of his life was spent in teaching, organ playing, and composing. He wrote a great deal of chamber music and numerous short piano pieces and songs, all of which were- characterised by able workmanship and a delicate poetic fancy. He might well be summed up as a lesser Grieg. Beethoven's Twelve Variations on ' Ein Madchen oder Weibchen ', which is one of Papageno's arias in Mozart's Magic Flute, is one of the most beautiful of Beethoven's many sets of variations. It is admirably written for cello, exploiting to the full the rich lyrical genius of the instrument. Another important feature of the variations is that the treatment is full of fine contrasts.
