Arthur Bliss's ' Music for Strings ' is one of his most admirable works, and in achievement bears comparison with Elgar's ' Introduction and Allegro '. It received its first performance at the Salzburg Festival in 1935 by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Adrian Boult.
The music consists of three movements that should follow each other without a break, and the writing shows a fine sense of colour and contrast in the handling of string tone.
