on BBC Radio 4 FM

with In the summer of 1919 Elgar completed his Cello Concerto. From then until his death 15 years later he composed scarcely at all. However he continued to conduct at the Three Choirs Festival and elsewhere and. in fact, recorded most of the music he had written earlier.
This account of these years includes readings from the correspondence between Elgar and Bernard Shaw. who was one of his most ardent champions, as well as recollections of Elgar by SIR ADRIAN BOULT , ASTRA DESMOND , DAME EDITH EVANS , SIR BARRY JACKSON. YEHUDI MENUHtN , IVOR NEWTON and ALAN WEBB. Extracts from the recordings conducted by Elgar himself include the Violin Concerto with the 15-year-old Menuhin as soloist. Producer ALAN HAYDOCK
