Play of the Month: The Beaux' Stratagem

on BBC One London

by GEORGE FARQUHAR with Brenda Bruce , Tom Conti Estelle Kohler , Ian Ogilvy Zoe Wanamaker
Archer and Aimwell, two gentlemen of fortune, head for the provinces, confident they will be able to trick an unsuspecting country heiress into a marriage that will rescue their bank balance. But they find in sleepy Lichfield, a surprising world of highwaymen, high-drinking, sexual daring and country innocence, which is more than a match for their London sophistication.
George Farquhar's last play, written when he was only 30 and dying of consumption, has a humanity and vigour and wild Irish wit which make it the liveliest and most down-to-earth of Restoration comedies.
