Fritz Weitzmann and Orchestra:
Pianoforte Concerto in D ...... Rowley
(First Performance)
Of late years Alec Rowley has been composing numerous large-scale works. Listeners will remember that in the early part of July his very interesting Concerto for piano and military band was broadcast, with the composer as soloist. His latest work is another Piano Concerto, this time with string orchestra and timpani and side-drum (ad. lib.).
This Concerto in D is very characteristic of the composer's style. The music is lyrical and expressive, particularly in the slow movement, and full of pleasing and straightforward melodies. The harmonies are colourful and of an impressionistic character. The piano writing, although for the most part simple, is very effective.
The first movement is notable for its strong and vigorous rhythms, the second for its delicate and intimate feeling, and the third for its brilliancy, which makes an excellent conclusion to a very notable work.
19.03 Orchestra:
Sonfonie singuliere ...... Berwald
The Berwald family was one of the most distinguished musical families in Stockholm during the first half of the nineteenth century. The two most important members were Johan, who had a European reputation as a violinist at the age of ten and later had three daughters, all singers of repute; and Franz Adolf (1796-1868), Johann's nephew, the composer of this symphony. His ' Sonfonie singuliere ' ¨re was written in 1845.
