James Hogg
Allan Cunningham and others
Reader, NAN SCOTT
James Hogg , familiarly known as the ' Ettrick Shepherd ', has been dead nearly a hundred years and it is now possible to assess the value of his literary work with some degree of certainty. At the same time, it has never been possible to withdraw him effectively from the shade cast by his great contemporary, Sir Walter Scott. Many of his songs and large portions of ' Kilmeny ' are destined for immortality, as also is his little-known prose work, ' The Memoires of a Justified Sinner '. Allan Cunningham was author of the beautiful ' Hame, Hame, Hame ', and a few other pieces written by him have found a permanent place in Scottish poetry. This programme will include ' The Canadian Boat Song ', the authorship of which has never been settled.
