Edinburgh International Festival
Beethoven and Bruckner: Nine Symphonies Bruckner was the first composer to take up the artistic challenges of Beethoven's Ninth; from it he derived his own symphonic trademarks.
Unlike Beethoven's symphony with its elemental setting of Schiller's Ode to Joy, Bruckner's Ninth never got its finale but ends magnificently unfinished on a note of profound and sublimely moving tragedy. Introduced by Donald Macleod. Beethoven Symphony No 9 in D minor
Janice Watson (soprano), Catherine Wyn-Rogers (mezzo), Stuart Skelton (tenor), Detlef Roth (bass), Edinburgh Festival Chorus, Philharmonia, conductor Charles Mackerras
