When a French-Canadian, known only as Pasquinel, risked his life in hostile Colorado Indian territory to trade for beaver in the dying years of the 18th century, he discovered a culture at its zenith. Unwittingly, he and his partners, Scottish fugitive Alexander McKeag and St Louis silver-smith Herman Bockweiss , were to be the forerunners of doom for the Indian and his environment.
