The pageant, which is the chief feature of the Nottinghamshire county week, is naturally centred round Nottingham Castle. The modern building, only two centuries old, is built upon the summit of an almost perpendicular rock, 133 feet high; of the original castle little more than a bastion and the main gateway remain. In 1068 Nottingham was visited by William I, who ordered the castle to be built. After the Conquest, William bestowed it on his natural son, William Peverell, so prominent in the Domesday Survey of the county. Here Charles I set up his standard and marked his break with Parliament in 1642. The castle was taken during the Civil War and remained in the hands of Parliament until it was demolished. In 1808 it was completely repaired, but was nearly destroyed by fire in the Reform Bill riots. It is now used as an art museum. These incidents, among others, figure in the pageant to be broadcast this evening. It was written by Mr. Nevil Truman, well-known in literary and dramatic circles, particularly for his production of the pageant of Castle Acre Priory.
