Does Art Gain from War?
The two world wars each produced an explosion in cultural demand and a surge of important new works, as have many other conflicts. In times of fear and bitter loss, people seem to turn inward spiritually and seek the consolations of art. But has this changed in recent decades? Vietnam yielded a protest movement but no lasting works of art. Does war not move artists the way it did? Norman Lebrecht leads another provocative debate on a cultural topic.
