Radio 2 celebrates the enduring appeal of American superhero comic books, whose otherworldly stories first hit the newstands in 1938 via the DC (Detective Comics) character Superman. Batman and Wonder Woman followed, as did the Marvel Comics crusaders the Amazing Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, X-Men and Captain America. The books never went out of favour - particularly for adolescent males - and got a seismic boost in 1978 with Richard Donner's hit movie, Superman. Comic-book adaptations are now something of a Hollywood fixture. Presenting the programme is Alice Cooper - himself once the subject of a Marvel comic series - with input from legendary comics creator Stan Lee, artist John Romita and writer/editor Roy Thomas, plus ex-Marvel employee Neil Tennant.
