10—'Conclusion of the Enterprise of Mr. Jonas and his Friend
'
Cast in order of speaking:
By learning through Nadgett that Jonas murdered Anthony Chuzzlewit , Tigg Montague is able to blackmail him into investing more capital in the Assurance Company and into persuading Mr. Pecksniff to become a partner in the enterprise. On their way to induce this gentleman to part with his capital, the carriage meets with an accident and Jonas makes a first, and abortive, attempt to murder Montague. After a successful meeting with Mr. Pecksniff, Jonas returns to London leaving Montague to complete the deal.
On reaching his home, he finds Mercy entertaining her sister, Mr. Moddle, Tom Pinch , and Ruth. His behaviour forces them to leave, and his temper is not improved when he learns from Mrs. Gamp that Chuffey has been talking of his father. He bids her keep close guard on the old man, and then tells Mercy that he is retiring to his room and must not be disturbed for at least thirty-six hours.
