Sandy Burnett introduces a recital given last week in Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall. Belgrade-born pianist Aleksandar Madzar made his debut with the Berlin
Philharmonic in 1990, since when he has appeared with many European orchestras under many distinguished conductors, including Andre Previn , Paavo Berglund and Libor Pesek. Last year he made his first appearance with both the BBC
Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. He has given solo recitals at major European festivals, including Salzburg and Aldeburgh, and is an experienced chamber musician who has performed frequently at London's Wigmore Hall. At the 1996 Leeds International Piano Competition, where he was awarded a third prize, he was described by Gerald Larner of The Times as "the most imaginative musician among the 1996 finalists". The following year in Milan he was awarded first prize in the Umberto Micheli piano competition and a special prize for his performance of a new work by Stockhausen which had been specially commissioned for that competition.
