1903: a small seaside town on the south coast of England. Joan, the bright young daughter of a retired Colonel, longs to escape from the restrictions of upper middle-class society. Her whole world is transformed by the arrival of a new tutor, Elizabeth, who encourages her to work towards university and a career in medicine. But, as the years go by, Joan is increasingly torn between her responsibility towards her ailing parents and her passionate desire for independence...
