Harry Carpenter sets the scene and introduces live coverage of the first day's play in the most prestigious golf tournament in the world.

Bill Rogers defends the title he won last year at Royal St George's. The strongest ever entry list includes Tom Watson who will be optimistic about his chances after winning the US Open last month. There are a host of former winners competing, including Jack Nicklaus, Severiano Ballesteros, Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Britain's Tony Jacklin and the 1973 winner on this course, Tom Weiskopf.
