The Italian Renaissance turned to its own uses, both secular and religious, the idea of the triumphal pageant as practised in ancient Rome. The Papacy used it; so did radical preachers like Savanarola. And Monteverdi's Vespers draws on the idea of the ' Triumph of Mary.'
