Richard Hughes

on BBC Radio 3

reads excerpts from The Wooden Shepherdess which is to be published tomorrow and is the second volume of his long historical novel The Human Predicament, in which he plans to cover the years 1923-1945.
When The Fox in the Attic, the first volume of the sequence, came out 12 years ago, the author was hailed as a British Tolstoy and the book as a major event in English letters.
