2: The Anatomy of Medicine
Charles Darwin , Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Eric Liddell were graduates of Edinburgh's distinguished faculty of medicine. Their successors today are students like STEVEN GARVIE, BRIAN KENNEDY , STUART MCMAIN and SIMON MACKEN ZIE. All four share a flat on the outskirts of the city.
Only a weekend after their latest exam, Simon is moving on to surgery. Stuart pulls on a gown and mask to help with his first anaesthetic. Brian, studying geriatrics, has to diagnose patients suffering from cancer and a stroke. He admits : ' Sometimes it's a competition to see who is shaking more
Meanwhile, Steven is walking into his first medical round in Ward 32 of Edinburgh's Royal Infirmary.
On Thursday nights it becomes the hospital's emergency ward, coping with casualties from all over the city.
