Soon after leaving university, Simon Mayo applied for a job as a BBC Radio studio manager. 'But I failed a hearing test,' he recalls.
'Apparently the hearing response in my left ear "dips" in the middle which meant I wouldn't be able to balance the BBC Symphony Orchestra or something.' But it makes no difference to his normal hearing. He's been BBC Radio Nottingham's regular lunchtime presenter for the past two years and this week, for the second week running, he takes over Radio 1's lunchtime show (12.45) while Gary Davies is on holiday.
