Francesco Lavagnino , who belongs to the younger generation of Italian composers, is Professor of Composition at the Accademia Chigiano at Siena. He has given this work the title of Pocket Symphony ' because in it he reduces the characteristic features of the classical symphony to bare essentials. There are three movements: Allegro con sussiego; andantino dolce ed espressivo, and vivace. In the finale the strings at first chatter lightly among themselves; there follows a march-like section; and the work ends with a return of a motive from the opening movement. Harold Rutland
