by Catherine Cameron. The story of a great sacrifice, produced by Robert Speaight
The great dam on the River Dnieper was conceived as part of the great Five Year Plan which started in 1927. This plan provided for big-scale industrialisation, electrification of the whole country, and a giant power plant on the Dnieper. By the end of the five years this great enterprise stood completed. But though built to last for centuries, it was to stand for only nine years; for with the German advance in August of last year the Russians were forced to sacrifice the fruit of their labours by destroying the dam.
