Thomas Merton , monk 1915-68
Poet, novelist, social activist and Trappist Monk - his influential concern for social issues forced the Catholic Church to take seriously questions of politics, racial injustice, Vietnam and nuclear disarmament. Merton immersed himself in Oriental religion and Marxist ideology trying from his 'own Christian viewpoint to imnrove understanding between Fast and West.
