Five hundred years ago, on July 7, 1456, the commission appointed by Pope Calixtus III to examine the trial of Jeanne d'Arc in 1431 pronounced the sentence of rehabilitation which annulled the earlier proceedings. The enquiry, which was based on the written records of 1431 and on the evidence of witnesses who had known Jeanne (including some who had taken part in her trial), was chiefly conducted by the Inquisitor of France, Jean Brehal.
