The interlude tells more about the life of Gladys Aylward, the parlourmaid who became a missionary in China. When the invading Japanese armies reached the town where she was working she was bombed out. but she fearlessly carried on her relief and rescue work. living in caves or in the open air. She tended the sick and wounded, visited prisoners, organised relief for the thousands of refugees, and later, enduring unbelievable hardships. led a hundred Chinese children to safety.
