Women as Composers

on BBC Radio 3

Portraits in words and music of Clara Schumann (1819-1896), Alma Mahler (1879-1964) and Dame Ethel Smyth (1858-1944)

The first two limited their composing in deference to the great men they married, but the 'the battling Dame' fought the ridicule of the world at large and brought about the present-day acceptance of women as composers. Oriel Sutherland (mezzo-sop) accompanied by David Willison (piano) sings songs by all three women. Plus gramophone records of chamber music by Clara Schumann, Ethel Smyth's Overture: The Wreckers, and archive recordings of the voices of Dame Ethel and Sir Thomas Beecham.
